The first workshop was held in the early 1990's. Changes were made, and the show debuted in Flat Rock, North Carolina with Steve Rothman as director. From there to Chicago, San Diego, and Thousand Oaks. Every production was successful with good reviews and lots of TV and press coverage... "The Today Show," "CBS Morning News," CNN, etc. And all the while, numerous offers from theaters around the country have poured in. The Schwartzes, who control the rights, have turned down requests as they honed the play until it would be in the shape that they feel is ready for others to take over the staging. Now, it is ready and they have allowed numerous productions in the upcoming year...only granted to the most insistent theaters.
To date, there have been many productions in as widely varied places as Winston-Salem, Maryland, Cincinnati, Scottsdale, Hicksville, Fargo, Alliance, Auburn, Birmingham, San Bernadino, Orlando, Washington D.C., Sacramento and Brisbane, Australia with productions in Noosa, Queensland and Manitoba Canada about to open.
The story of the eight characters "Gilligan’s Island: The Musical" is simple. Beginning with the theme song (selected the #1 TV theme song of all time), these seven familiar characters are shipwrecked and try to get off the island. Natural disasters befall them...hurricanes, quicksand, etc. as they learn to get along and survive. But their biggest challenge is the U.F.O. and its Alien who monitors their behavior. By the end of the play, the castaways manage to defeat the extraterrestrial and save the entire planet while still staying marooned themselves.
"Gilligan's Island: The Musical" has everything, comedy, heart, love, drama, nostalgia, sing-able songs. It is flexible and can adapt to and Off Broadway stage, large Broadway stage, and would be a perfect vehicle for the tourist trade in Las Vegas, Florida, and/or Hawaii.
